Enter the ALU-EXP 15– a 15-meter (~49-foot) exploration sailing catamaran that fuses commercial-grade aluminum engineering with high-tech carbon composite construction. Built on the ocean-proven footprint of the Max Cruise 48 and engineered by Max Cruise Marine in partnership with Sailing Dawn Hunters, the ALU-EXP 15 is built for serious off-grid expedition sailing without the usual weight penalties.

Here is a breakdown of what this new catamaran design brings to the table.


1. Hybrid Material Architecture: Aluminum Strength, Carbon Speed

The headline story of the ALU-EXP 15 is its hybrid hull and deck structure. Traditional all-aluminum catamarans can be heavier, requiring bigger sail plans and compromising waterline efficiency. The ALU-EXP 15 solves this through strategic material placement:

  • Below the Window Line (Commercial Aluminum): The hulls, main deck, bridge deck, sugar scoops, and mast compression posts are constructed from high-strength marine aluminum. Designed with an A-frame structural reinforcement, this lower structure is able to absorb the rigging loads, heavy seas, and impact hazards.
  • Above the Window Line (Carbon-Infused Composite): The coach roof, mullions, and upper superstructure are built using carbon-reinforced vinylester resin infused over a foam core.

By keeping top weight exceptionally low, the design lowers the vessel’s center of gravity and maintains an optimised payload capacity – for a CE Ocean Class A rating without sacrificing agility.


2. Engineered for Safety: Collision & Impact Protection

If you’re sailing in remote waters, equipment failure or collision isn’t just an inconvenience – it’s a critical threat. The ALU-EXP 15 is built with commercial-grade safety engineering:

  • Sacrificial Mini-Keels: In the event of a high-speed collision with a submerged shipping container or reef, the mini-keels are designed to shear off cleanly without breaching the integrity of the hulls.
  • Sacrificial Rudders: Partial break-away design ensures that if a rudder takes a heavy hit, a portion snaps away while leaving enough stock behind for emergency steering.
  • Shaft Drives: Sail drives are prone to corrosion and leave holes in the bottom of your boat if knocked off. The ALU-EXP 15 uses traditional, robust shaft drives paired with watertight engine room bulkheads.
  • Crash Bows: Reinforced forward collision zones contain damage in the event of a bow-first impact.

3. Hybrid Propulsion: Cross Oceans on Minimal Fuel

While standard builds feature twin 40 HP Yanmar diesel engines, the ALU-EXP 15 offers a parallel hybrid package powered by Hybrid Marine International.

This isn’t a complex, high-maintenance experimental setup – it’s a proven system designed specifically for long-distance expedition cruising tested on the Max Cruise Marine catamaran range over tens of thousands of miles.

  • Twin 15 kW Air-Cooled Electric Motors: Low-noise, instantaneous torque for maneuvering in marinas without firing up diesel engines. Because they are air-cooled, there are no raw-water pumps or manifolds to clog.
  • Direct Mechanical Generation (20 kW Capacity): Using a mechanical dog-leg clutch, the Yanmar diesels double as dedicated DC generators. Firing up the diesels pumps up to 10 kW per side directly into the battery bank – no separate AC generator required.
  • AI-Driven Hydrogeneration: Under sail, the free-spinning props generate power and feed it back into the 35 kWh 48V lithium bank. The latest system uses algorithms to adjust regeneration drag based on sea state, speed, and electrical load. It learns as it sails.
  • Real-World Proof: In ocean testing, Max Cruise Marine 45s, 48 and 55s have completed ocean passages consuming as little as 300 liters of fuel by relying on hydrogeneration, solar, and electric powwer.

4. Interior Comfort & Deck Configurations

Because the ALU-EXP 15 inherits its interior layout from a proven Max Cruise 48 platform, buyers don’t have to guess how the living space will feel.

  • No Structural Bulkhead Constraints: On fiberglass boats, interior furniture often doubles as structural bulkheads. Because the aluminum hull of the ALU-EXP 15 handles all structural loads, the interior non-structural layouts, cabinetry, and storage spaces can be semi-customised to the owner’s needs.
  • Two Deck Layout Options:
    1. Standard Deck Layout: Maximises main salon interior square footage.
    2. Forward Cockpit Layout: Includes a heavy-duty forward door opening onto a protected foredeck area. When anchored, opening the forward door and saloon hatches creates great natural airflow – keeping the boat cool in tropical climates like Thailand or the Caribbean without turning on the A/C. You’ll have plenty of power for the A/C if you need it in any case.

5. Built in a Commercial Shipyard

Unlike boutique, low-volume boatyards, the ALU-EXP 15 is built in Max Cruise Marine’s high-capacity shipyard in Vietnam – a facility producing over 200 commercial and recreational vessels annually.

The yard maintains strictly segregated manufacturing zones. Composite vacuum infusion and aluminum hot-work/welding take place in completely separate bays. This prevents airborne steel and dust particles from contaminating aluminum welds, ensuring maximum metallurgical strength and weld integrity throughout the hull.
