Seawind Unveils the 1270

A New Generation 42-Foot Cruiser

Seawind Catamarans has pulled the wraps off its latest model, the Seawind 1270, a 42-foot sporty cruiser that builds directly on the success of the much-loved Seawind 1260.

Where the 1260 earned accolades—including Cruising World’s “Best Cruising Catamaran Under 50ft” in 2019—the new 1270 represents an evolutionary step forward, with 35 design changes aimed at real-world sailors.

A Step Beyond the 1260

The 1260 has long been a favourite among long-distance cruisers, and Seawind makes no secret of the fact that the new boat owes much to the feedback of existing owners.

The brief was straightforward: keep the core DNA but address the wish-list of sailors who’ve logged serious miles.

The 1270 is slightly larger—400mm longer and 120mm wider—but those extra dimensions have been put to work. The hulls are 60mm wider, the topsides more vertical, and the result is noticeably more interior volume, particularly in the forward cabins.

The foredeck and front beam have also been raised, which not only gives flat working decks stem to stern but improves the seakeeping of the boat offshore.

Interior Options and Features

Seawind is offering the 1270 in two layouts: a galley-down three-cabin version (a layout that has long been a hallmark of the brand) and a galley-up option with a forward-facing nav station. Both retain the practical touches that Seawind devotees will recognise: the large opening forward windows, excellent ventilation, and the ever-popular saloon daybed. You can choose between 3 (owner’s) or 4 cabins.

Safety and Handling

The boat has been designed to meet Category A offshore certification, with improvements to safety and access. Side gates, extended transoms, and 800mm stanchions with four lifelines all add reassurance both in harbour and at sea.

On deck, the optimisation of the laminate layup and the selective use of carbon in high-load areas has made the structure both lighter and stronger. Solar panels are also a key consideration, with the roof designed to carry up to 2,040 watts of generation capacity, and the entire roof doubles as a rain-catching surface.

Propulsion and Systems

Standard propulsion comes in the form of twin 29hp Yanmar diesels. But in a nod to the times, Seawind has flagged a hybrid-electric option planned for 2026.

Production and Debut

The 1270 will be built by the same experienced team in Ho Chi Minh City that has been producing the 1260, ensuring continuity of craftsmanship. Tooling is already underway, with hull #1 expected by June 2026. The design will make its public debut at the Annapolis Boat Show this October, following an online livestream launch.

Seawind’s Philosophy in Practice

Richard Ward, founder and CEO, sums up the approach simply: “We set out to create the best possible 42-foot catamaran by listening to what sailors really need.” The result, he says, is a boat “built for adventure, designed for life.”

Seawind’s philosophy has always been to balance performance with comfort, avoiding the excesses of floating condos while not sacrificing livability. The 1270 seems to follow that same course, carrying the line’s reputation for robust offshore cats into its next generation.
